How to size a silicone joint correctly

Width / depth ratio rule

For a silicone joint to perform over time (elasticity, mechanical hold), the width / depth ratio should ideally be 2:1. A 10 mm wide joint should therefore be 5 mm deep. If the gap is deeper, it is recommended to use a foam backer rod (Polifoam type) to calibrate depth.

Why not deeper?

A joint that is too deep forces the silicone to bond to 3 surfaces (bottom + 2 side walls). During expansion/contraction, it tears instead of stretching. The foam backer rod prevents bonding to the back and lets the bead "breathe" freely between the two walls.

Sanitary joints: typical depth

For bathtub, shower and basin joints, the visible thickness is generally 4 to 6 mm wide x 4 to 6 mm deep. This is the default value of the calculator above.

Exterior aluminium joinery joints

For perimeter joints between aluminium joinery and a wall (concrete, brick), plan 8 to 12 mm wide x 6 to 10 mm deep with a foam backer rod. Use neutral silicone (Akfix 915N) to avoid aluminium corrosion.
